Where does house dust come from?
Dust is tiny particles with a diameter of up to 0.1 mm that enter homes through windows and ventilation, as well as on the soles of shoes. Apartment residents themselves become effective “producers” of dust: this includes scrapings from human skin, dander and pet hair. In it you can find the remains of insects, fragments of feathers, fungal spores and particles of various building materials. Every day, from 30 to 60 mg of dust enters our body.
Scientists recently conducted a study of house dust from 35 countries. Depending on the city, it contained arsenic, lead, chromium, nickel, manganese and other elements dangerous to the body. And ticks that feed on dead particles of human epidermis pose a health hazard. Their secretions often cause allergies and asthma. Therefore, people with such diseases should approach dust control thoroughly.
How to beat dust
To get started, you can take some inspiration from the staff at Winchester Cathedral in the UK. For four weeks they cleaned the statues and other decorations of the sanctuary from a layer of centuries-old dust. If they succeeded, then so can you.
